Census Microfilm Reliability Rating
The Reliabilty
Rating of
the microfilm of each federal census is our own subjective assessment of the confidence with which genealogists
can expect to find individuals who were actually
enumerated during a given census year.

Our Reliability
Rating is based upon three primary factors:
the
completeness
of the available microfilm records
To what extent does the microfilm include the complete census records
that were originally created during a given census year?
the
readability
of the information contained in the microfilm
To what extent is the handwriting of the various
census enumerators who recorded the census information legible and readable?
the
quality
of the microfilm photography
To what extent is the microfilm free of photographic defects, such as dark shadows caused by improper lighting, washed-out transparent glare caused
by overexposure of the microfilm, blurred or multiple images caused by an out-of-focus camera, and census pages
that were inadvertently missed, and not even photographed at all!
All of these unfortunate human errors have occured during the microfilming process, and have resulted in irreplaceable
census information being lost forever when the original census records were destroyed after the microfilming was
completed.
