1890 Special Census of
Civil War Veterans and Widows
The 1890 federal census is the eleventh census of the United States.
It was authorized by Congress on March 1, 1889 (25 Stat. 760), and was begun on June 1, 1890. The enumeration was
to be completed within thirty days, or two weeks for communities with populations of 10,000 or more.
The 1890 Federal Census of the United States was so badly damaged in
a fire that occurred in the Commerce Department Building in Washington, D.C. on January 22, 1921 that more than
99% of the original population schedules were disposed of without being microfilmed.
The entire 1890 Federal Census of North Dakota was completely destroyed in this fire, and
the only surviving
schedule of the 1890 Federal Census of South Dakota was a fragment of Jefferson Township, Union County, South Dakota,
enumerating only one single family, the James M. and Permelia Lafferre family.
| Fortunately, all of a special schedule of veterans who served in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps of the United States during
the Civil War and the widows of these veterans residing in North Dakota and South Dakota in 1890 did survive the
fire. |
