1885 Federal Census of the
Dakota Territory

The 1885 special census was authorized by Congress on March 3, 1879 (20
Stat. 480), and was begun on June 1, 1885.
The Dakota Territory was one of only five states and territories that elected to take the1885 Special Census with
half the cost of the census reimbursed by the federal government. The schedules, returned to the Secretary of the
Interior, show the same information as the 1880 schedules.

is substantially incomplete for that part of the territory that would eventually become South Dakota.
Researchers trying to find their South Dakota ancestors will experience the least likelihood of actually locating
them in this census. Census records exist for only 20 of the 76 South Dakota counties.
